Hoosiers Supporting Literacy

Hoosiers Supporting Literacy is a unique initiative where noteworthy Hoosiers are matched with Hoosier classic pieces of literature, both fiction and non-fiction. Noteworthy Hoosiers have graciously volunteered their time to read the first chapter of a Hoosier classic or poem. The following playlist contains videos from the project.

1. Homer Drew, retired Valparaiso University Basketball Coach, reads from Coach John Wooden: One-on-One by Jay Carty.
​2. MaryFrances McCourt, Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President of Indiana University, reads from the transcript of the "Gettysburg Address."
3. James Madison, History Professor at Indiana University, reads from Hoosiers: A New History of Indiana, a book that he wrote.
4. Leslie Bailey, reporter for the Indianapolis Star, reads from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

8. Cowboy Bob, legendary Channel 4 TV host, reads from The Bears of Blue River by Charles Major.
9. Bob Kravitz reads from Last of the Small Town Heroes by Bobby Plump.
10. Jennie DeVoe, jazz musician, reads from Indianapolis Jazz by David L. Williams.
11. Lloyd Wright, President and Chief Executive Officer of WFYI Public Media, reads about George McGinnis in 19 Stars of Indiana by Michael Maurer.
12. Vincent Ventresca, actor, reads from The Best of James Whitcomb Riley and Papertowns by John Green.
13. Charles Hyde, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Benjamin Harrison Site, reads from a speech by Benjamin Harrison.
14. Dr. Linda Bennett, President of the University of Southern Indiana, reads about Jane Blaffer Owen in The 19 Stars of Indiana: Exceptional Hoosier Women by Michael Maurer.
15. Bernard Franklin, NCAA Executive Associate Vice President, reads about Oscar Robinson in Indiana Legends by Nelson Price.
16. Gregg Doyel, Indianapolis Star Sports Columnist, reads from Hoosier Hysteria by Bob Williams.

17. James Alexander Thom, author and historian, reads from Panther in the Sky, a book that he wrote and Archy and Mehitabel" by Don Marquis.
18. Rep. Luke Messer, Congressman, reads from Robert Wise: Shadowlands by Wes Gehring.
19. Dave McFadden, President of Manchester University, reads from A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel.
20. Randy Ollis, meteorologist for WISH-TV, reads from The Hoosier Schoolmaster by J. Edward Eggleston, former Decatur County resident.
21. Mike "Doc" Emrick, legendary NBC sportcaster, reads from "The Gettysburg Address" by Abraham Lincoln.
22. Florence Henderson, actress known best as "Carol Brady," reads from "Little Orphan Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley.
23. Joe Donnelly, U.S. Senator, reads from a column by Ernie Pyle.
24. Nelson Price, author, journalist, historian, and radio show host, reads about Carl Fisher from Indiana Legends.. Famous Hoosiers from Johnny Appleseed to David Letterman, a book he wrote.
25. Jerry L. Ross, astronaut, reads from Spacewalker: My Journey in Space and Faith as NASA's Record-Setting Frequent Flyer, his autobiography.
​26. Daniel Elsener, President of Marian University, reads from Front Porch Tales by Phillip Gulley.
27. Ray Boomhower, senior editor at the Indianapolis Historical Society Press, reads from a column by Ernie Pyle.
28. Dr. Lake Lambert III, President of Hanover College, reads from The Rise of American Civilization by Charles Beard and Mary Beard.
29. Glory-June Greiff, public historian, reads from Morning Face by Gene Stratton Porter.
30. Nate Dunlevy, author, reads from Invincible, Indiana, a book he wrote.
31. Eva Kor, Holocaust survivor, shares her life story.
32. Mohja Kahf, Arab-American author and poet, reads from The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf, a book she wrote.
33. David Hoppe, author and cultural strategist, reads from Food for Thought: An Indiana Harvest and Personal Indianapolis: Thirteen Years of Observing, Exhorting and Satirizing the Hoosier Capital, two books he wrote.

34. Scott Russell Sanders, Indiana University English Professor, reads from Earth Works: Selected Essays, a book he wrote.
35. Helen Thorpe, author and journalist, reads from Soldier Girls: The Battles of Three Women at Home and at War, a book she wrote.
36. Mark Heckler, President of Valparaiso University, reads from Who Am I This Time? by Kurt Vonnegut.

37. April Pulley Sayre, author, reads from The Slowest Book Ever, a book she wrote.
38. Dan Wakefield, author, reads from Under the Apple Tree, a book he wrote and Kurt Vonnegut Letters.
39. Robert D. Rucker, Indiana Supreme Court Justice, reads from An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser.
​40. Shari Wagner, Indiana Poet Laureate, reads from two poems,  "The Harmonist at Nightfall," and a poem in the voice of Elizabeth Finnern from Greensburg.​
41. Robert Manuel, president of the University of Indianapolis, reads from An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser.
42. Margaret Peterson Haddix, author, reads from Running Out of Time, a book she wrote.
43. Becky Skillman, former Indiana Lieutenant Governor and CEO of Radius Indiana, reads from The Friendly Persuasion by Jesamyn West.
